It really depends on what you will use for the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich. Use bread that is at once tough and soft, such that it will not break when grilled and not crunchy and not soft. Great texture with fantastic flavor could be achieved using sourdough, French bread, and brioche. But you should not select any dense bread.
This also goes into the fact that, given cheese is literally what stars the grilled cheese, how its variety one picks will influence a difference in the flavors produced from it. Feel free to mix and match your melted cheeses with whatever works the best for your palette. For an additional pop of flavor, dust it lightly with Parmesan or put a layer or two of cream cheese underneath.
While a simple grilled cheese sandwich is little more than bread and cheese, some flavor extras can take the sandwich to a whole new level. Examples of flavorful extras include thin slices of tomatoes, caramelized onions, Crispy Bacon, or even a smear of pesto or mustard. Be sure not to overload the sandwich with too many extras because they overpower the delicate flavor of the cheese.
Quality butter or oil will ensure you have the perfectly golden, crispy exterior on your grilled cheese sandwich. Brush with a thin layer of butter or apply oil on the outer sides of the bread for even browning and crispiest of textures. You can also use infused oils or flavored butters. Garlic butter or herb-infused olive oil will make it even more flavorful.
The most common mistake people make when grilling cheese sandwiches is that they do not preheat the pan or grill properly. To ensure that your sandwich cooks evenly and develops a golden crust, you need to preheat your cooking surface over medium heat for a few minutes before adding the sandwich. This way, the bread starts toasting immediately, so it does not become soggy.
Grilling a cheese sandwich takes patience. It is tempting to increase the heat to get it faster, but that's when you will end up with burnt bread and unmelted cheese. Cook it on medium-low so the cheese slowly melts into the bread and crisps. Use a lid on the pan so that the heat does not go out.
Now we get to the tricky part. That sandwich is going to have to be turned upside-down. Remember you are turning it upside-down; be sure nothing comes loose. Place one spatula under, supporting just enough of the bread and turn that sandwich to show the other side. As needed gently gather runaway cheese and filling, working it back in around that filling with your spatula. Toast it on the other side for just a few more minutes so that it's golden brown and gooey cheese.
If your grilled cheese sandwich was done to perfection, never give in to that sudden urge to take a little nibble. Instead you should transfer it to your cutting board and let it rest for a minute or two. This helps set the cheese a little so that when you cut the sandwich, it is not as likely to ooze out. Slice the sandwich in half diagonally or into quarters using a sharp knife. Serve immediately with your favorite sides or dipping sauces.
The other common cause of soggy grilled cheese sandwiches is too much moisture from the ingredients, such as tomatoes, or the cheese was not melted properly. Prevent this by patting wet ingredients dry with a paper towel before adding them to the sandwich and ensuring the cheese melts evenly so there are no pockets of liquid.
Burnt bread can ruin a perfect grilled cheese sandwich. Keep an eye on the heat and adjust as needed to maintain an even cooking temperature. If you notice that the bread is browning too quickly, turn down the heat or move the sandwich to a cooler part of the pan or grill.
Ununiform melting of cheese would cause the pockets of gooey cheese and the unmelted parts. It melts it in a manner to achieve an even result as one disperses it across the bread, cooking over low heat while the cheese is being melted slowly. Testing Various Flavors
Classic grilled cheese is an amazing delight; don't be afraid to get wild and try mixing and matching new flavors. Feel free to add some kinds of cheese or herbs and spices for added complexity, or mix it all up by including sweet or savory fillings. The possibilities are endless! End
